Printing Guide

I use an old Brother HL-2270DW black and white laser printer to maintain this physical recipe box. Here is how I get perfect 6x4 cards.

Drivers & Setup

To print on 6x4 cards on macOS, you must download Brother’s official drivers from their support site. The generic macOS drivers do not handle this custom paper size correctly.

Printer Configuration

  1. Paper Size: In the print dialog, create a new custom paper size for 4x6 inches. I recommend 0.25 inch margins on all sides.
  2. Feeding: Insert the card into the front manual feed tray (the door with the Brother logo).
  3. Orientation: Feed the card with the narrow 4-inch side entering the printer first.
  4. Dialog Settings: Ensure your paper size is set to your custom 4x6 preset and the orientation is set to Portrait.

PDF Export

Every recipe on this site includes a “Print” button that uses a custom-generated PDF. This PDF is specifically formatted for the 6x4 card size to ensure typography and margins are consistent with a traditional recipe box.
